TENTATIVE CLASS / ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE

Important: ; Bring 2 sheets of white 18" X 24"mayfair paper and 2 bulldog clips to every class.

Week 1: (August 27)

Introduction to course and explanation of materials.

Lecture: The relationship between drawing and the written word.

Homework: Write or find an example of a written metaphor and its visual equivalent.

Week 2: (September 10)

In class: Drawing the still life, different approaches to line and contour drawing.

Homework: Do a series of blind contour drawings.

Week 3: (September 17)

Introduction to major Project 1 : Drawing with a poem.

In class: Short drawing exercises, the flat surface and the illusion of space.;;

Homework: Write a description of the intention of your project.

Week 4: (September 24)

Presentation of projects, introduction to critical methods.

Reading: About Criticism (About Criticism .pdf version)

Homework: Self Portrait in pencil.

Week 5: (October 1)

In class: Drawing from a dark surface (tenebrism). Exploring specific light sources in drawing. Exploring tone and volume.

Homework: Drapery

Week 6: (October 8)

Introduction to the model. In class: Charcoal contour drawings and gesture exercises.

Homework: Applying the use of a brush in drawing.

Week 7: (October 15, midterm assessment)

Lecture: Formal issues in drawing.

In class: Composition, perspective and shading in a drawing exercise.

Homework: Identify basic design use in the visual environment

Week 8: (October 22)

In class: Drawing exercises and an extended contour drawing of a model.

Homework: Drawing hands and feet.

Week 9: (October 29)

In class: Shading, charcoal drawing techniques. Extended tonal drawing of the figure.

Homework: Drawing as a method of documentation.

Week 10: (November 5)

Movie presentation.

Week 11: (November 12)

Introduction to Major Project 2: Group project

In class: Drawing outside the classroom, perspective and textures.

Homework: Written proposal for a final project

Week 12: (November 19)

Proposal for a final project due.

In class: Discussion and merging of project proposals/ formation of groups.

Homework: Preparation of drawings and diagrams for final project.

Week 13: (November 26)

Museum visit.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Paper:

1 Pad of newsprint paper 18"X 24"to begin with

1 Sketchbook 9"X 12"

individual sheets of paper to be bought as needed

white Mayfair paper 18"X 24"

tracing paper 9"X 12"

Media:

artists pencils 4B,2B,and HB.

1 box of willow charcoal sticks

1 soft pastel stick (in white)

cheap watercolour or gouache set

Other:

medium watercolour brush

cheap round plastic palette (10 wells)

kneadable eraser (soft like chewing gum)

plastic eraser

drawing stump (smudging stick)

large bulldog clips

1 roll masking tape

small x-acto or olfa type knife

glue stick

2 plastic water containers

hand soap, a small towel and a box of Wet ones
or similar product. (For cleanup)
