project 3 Culture

[TOLERANCE] [DIVERSITY] [EQUALITY]

The term culture is reflective, empowering and inclusive. The exploration of different cultural tapestries allows for a visibility from the minority view both as a reflection of the majority and an empowerment of the minority situation. This attitude is distinct from "politically correct" since it is involved directly with the other rather than the perception and contextualization of the self.

Here we identify an a priori in the definition of cultures. To actually entertain the existence of any minority is to assume a majority. The assumed majority acquires the role of an ideal. A numerical majority in any situation becomes the basis a defining culture. In the occidental meta-narrative it is the progression towards the Western Ideal

What is culture?
Do you identify with a particular soci-economic group?
Do you identify with a particular gender group?
Do you identify with a particular cultural group?
Which cultural group do you wish to work for?
What museum have you most recently visited?
What movies/film clips/websites have you most recently seen?

We all entertain a cultural narrative that comes from the way we were raised or from family histories or from political regions. I would like you to research your cultural roots as if you were looking from outside. For example, if you are an Estonian, research everything about estonians from the point of view of someone who is not Estonian. Look at the material and determine which part of your cultural heritage is a narrative (a story that you have been told) and which part of it actually is relevant to you in your present narrative.

1) Form a GROUP of at least two students.
2) DEVELOP an idea chart that generates a proposal for an integrated and unified visual document that expresses a viewpoint of a cultural narrative.
3) Develop a WRITTEN proposal, a storyboard and preliminary work for a final project.
4) PRODUCE a final project. It might be formal (as in basic design or artistic), narrative, symbolic, conceptual (but documented) or practical (as in an advertisement, website or portfolio)

INTERACTIVITY and MOVEMENT (literal or metaphoric) is a must in this project.
YOU MAY: use traditional internet, animation, film or ww2 (youtube, facebook, on line drawing and painting tools, virtual worlds etc.)
YOU MUST: have a concrete document to acvcompany your project.
PLANNING and PROOF of PROCESS (concrete evidence)will generate a higher grade.
